#RandWaterShutdown: VOX POP: Do you think the planned maintenance by Rand Water was necessary?

Residents complain that the water shortage will affect many people and some local businesses.

Mavis Ngobeni: They don't care about small business owners who rely on water to operate. It will have a negative impact on them and cause some to dig deep into their pockets, which may result in their not generating additional income.

Rand Water commenced a shutdown to complete a tie-in between the A19 and B14 with a new pipeline, installation of isolation valves, and system upgrades at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station, which resulted in a water shortage.

The interruption in service began at 19:00 on July 11, and Rand Water intended to reopen the water network at 05:00 on July 14. However some areas are only expected to have their water supply restored fully up to 10 days later.

The Randburg Sun took to the streets to ask the residents if they thought the planned maintenance by Rand Water was necessary, and here’s what they had to say…

Lebohang Mkhata: It is completely unnecessary because water is important and humans cannot survive without it. They should consider how terribly it will affect people and small businesses like car washes that rely on water every day to keep their operations going. They should consider individuals before implementing maintenance.

Vusi Nkosi: It's not required at all; I believe they should have placed water tankers before the shutdown began, as many people are now suffering from a lack of water. We can't even quench our thirst as frequently as we used to.

Innocent Gama: Absolutely not, since if they're going to fix the pipelines, they should at least reduce the hours of water shortage. It is completely unacceptable since we cannot survive without water; practically everything we do on a daily basis needs water.
