A tour of Ward 134, service delivery and public meetings are the focus for Devon Steenkamp ATM

Many do not know how to report the illegal dumping of rubbish to Pikitup. Here is how.

There are so many issues Devon Steenkamp is tackling in Ward 134 that the ward councillor hardly knew where to start when asked what was new.

Sitting at his desk in his unofficial office at Boskruin Community Centre – where residents can arrange to meet him – Steenkamp admitted that infrastructure and service delivery have been his focus of late.

Especially electricity, water and refuse removal.

“I want to have a public meeting where residents can meet City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup officials,” he said.

“North Riding, Kya Sand and Sundowner Extension 7 have been hit hard lately with vandalism of electricity infrastructure as well as water outages. But there have been incidents all over the ward. Recently, Boskruin also had a mini substation vandalised and residents had to wait five days for it to be replaced but even after it was, there were faulty parts and it took a few more days of electricity tripping to get this sorted.”

Steenkamp said he had looked at ways residents could visit the community centre to charge devices or even take hot showers but the situation was resolved before these ideas could be materialised.

“In December, we also had plans of improving our local parks but we have had to go back to the basics of service delivery in this too, where basic needs were not met.”

Issues such as the dumping of rubbish in public parks and on the side of the road were still a problem and Steenkamp encouraged residents to continue reporting these.

They can be reported to Pikitup at info@pikitup.co.za or 087 357 1068.

The ward will have integrated service delivery meetings from February 13 to 17 and residents can stay tuned on the outcome of these.

Furthermore, newly elected members of Steenkamp’s ward committee will be doing a tour of the area to become familiar with it and its recurring problems, in the coming days.
