Four men arrested with suspected counterfeit cash in Ferndale

The men were arrested with suspected counterfeit R100 and R200 notes.

Off-duty Randburg police officers arrested four men for possession of suspected counterfeit money. They will appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges.

Spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the men between the ages of 18 and 35 were arrested by two officers who were on their way to work. “It is alleged that on May 1, at about 17:30, the two officers, Sergeant Albert Leta and Constable Zanele Senne were on their way to work in their private vehicle when they noticed a vehicle driving recklessly at the corner of Oxford Street and Malibongwe Drive in Ferndale,” he said.

“The officers followed the vehicle until it stopped at a bus terminal picking up another suspect. The officers pulled their vehicle in front of the vehicle to block it.” The officers got out and ordered the suspects to step out of the vehicle. Five men were searched and found to be in possession of suspected counterfeit South African R100 and R200 notes.

“Four suspects were arrested on the spot while one managed to evade the arrest after he ran away,” Maja said, adding that more charges may be added.

Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones praised the members for their vigilance while also off duty.
“Their observations showed determination and how they value their calling,” Maja concluded.
