3 men arrested for armed robbery in Ferndale

Police advise community members to not keep large amounts of cash on them after an armed robbery in Ferndale.

Three men will soon appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court to face charges of robbery with a firearm.

The men, between the ages of 28 and 44, were caught after the incident in Ferndale on the morning of April 23. The victim had just come from a sports betting company with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“He alleged that on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue he was blocked by the suspect’s vehicle,” said Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja. “They switched off his vehicle and took the keys while one suspect was [pointing a firearm at him]. He managed to get out of the vehicle and run away.”

The supects took his cash and other items from the vehicle, and fled the scene. The next day the victim saw the suspects, called the police, and the trio was arrested.

Randburg police acting station commander, Colonel Andries Odendaal applauded the members for their swift and quick response when needed by their community. He further urged the public to be involved in crime prevention initiatives as that will minimise crime around the area.

Randburg police gave the following tips:

  • Do not keep a lot of cash in your possession, rather use electronic transfers when possible
  • Always have some friends with you when you are in unfamiliar places.
