Off-duty police officer witnesses robbery unfold and responds to make arrest in Kensington B.

A cellphone thief was brought to book after a car chase resulted in a two-car collision.

A Randburg Police Station off-duty officer witnessed the robbery and responded to make the arrest
Spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the officer was driving near the corner of Bond and Burke streets in Kensington B around 17:20 on February 17 when he saw a man snatch a phone from a woman and flee in a getaway vehicle.

“The officer chased the vehicle until the driver lost control and collided with another vehicle,” Maja said.

“The suspects got out of the vehicle and ran in different directions. The officer ran after the one who had grabbed the phone. He managed to catch him and upon searching him, found the phone.”

The 20-year-old man was arrested and will appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of common robbery.

Maja said in a separate incident in Ferndale, a 30-year-old woman was arrested for housebreaking and theft after she had allegedly gained access to the complainant’s property through an open window.
Once inside, the suspect allegedly stole electrical equipment.

She was later identified and arrested, and will also appear in court after being formally charged.

The captain encouraged business and property owners to ensure their windows are shut when not in use and have security bars.
