246 motorists arrested for drunken driving across the City of Joburg

JMPD's Xolani Fihla urges motorists to stop drinking and driving.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has recently embarked on DUI (driving under the influence) operations across the city, which has so far resulted in the arrest of 246 motorists.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol remains a serious concern which can lead to serious injuries and death.

Road Safety remains a top priority and drunk driving compromises the safety of all road users,” said JMPD’s spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

“When breathalysed motorists’ readings were over the legal limit of 0.24 milligrams of alcohol per litre of breath, they were all detained at various police stations in the city.

JMPD will continue with these operations, and remove drunken motorists off the road before they cause harm to themselves and other road users.”

Fihla urged motorists to not drive under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substance, avoid excessive speeding, and reckless and negligent driving. “Be courteous to other road users and let us arrive alive at our planned destinations,” he said.
