Street crimes are on the increase in Randburg police’s Sector 1, said the Community Policing Forum.
Public relations officer Pommie Lutchman said security companies in the area had confirmed the increase in crime and urged residents to do the following:
- Do not walk and talk on your cellphone. This means you are not paying attention to what is happening around you. It also provides opportunities for smash and grabs, theft and robberies
- Be cautious when strangers approach you. Criminals often take this chance to rob you of your money and other possessions
- Knives and bogus firearms are often used in street robberies. Watch for suspicious behaviour. Walk with friends if possible
- When driving in cars and taxis do not talk on your phone when sitting next to an open window. Thieves use these opportunities to grab your phone or bag
- Do not leave possessions lying on seats in cars. This makes you a target for a potential smash and grab.
Randburg Sector 1 comprises Bordeaux North and South, Clynton/Riepen Park, Craighall, Hurlingham HGC, Hurlingham Manor, Hurlingham Village, Lyme Park/Saints Manor, Randburg CBD and Willowild/Glenadrienne.
