City Power suspends load reduction indefinitely

City Power is thrilled to be able to suspend load reduction, but encouraged residents to continue co-operating in order to minimise power supply interruptions, and ensure load reduction doesn't make a comeback.

City Power has announced the indefinite suspension of load reduction measures effective immediately.

Isaac Mangena, City Power spokesperson, explained that this decision reflects their commitment to providing reliable electricity supply while balancing the needs of their customers and safeguarding the integrity of their grid infrastructure.

Several key factors contributed to this decision. In recent months, City Power has intensified its efforts in cutting off illegal connections and addressing meter tampering.

The results of these operations have been encouraging, as we have witnessed a notable reduction in pressure on the electricity grid. Moreover, these actions have prompted many customers to approach us for legal reconnections, leading to a more responsible use of electricity as they now pay for the services they consume.”

The entity ramped up its energy efficiency and demand side management efforts to encourage customers to adopt efficient use of energy, resulting in the de-loading of high and medium voltage electrical networks under severe stress.

“Additionally, during the recent Token Identifier (TID) conversion from KRN1 to KRN2, we initiated a thorough normalisation process of our meters. This initiative has played a crucial role in stabilising electricity consumption and supply across the city, further reinforcing our ability to suspend load reduction measures. While we are thrilled about this development, we must stress the importance of continued responsible electricity usage.”

Although the suspension of load reduction is indefinite, the entity wants to remind customers that any significant change in consumer behaviour, such as a spike in electricity consumption, illegal connections, or meter tampering could necessitate the reintroduction of load reduction.

“Should this occur, we may have to act swiftly, potentially with little to no prior notice, to protect the stability of our electricity supply.”

City Power appreciates the understanding and co-operation of customers during what has been a challenging period.

“We remain committed to ensuring a sustainable and reliable electricity supply for all our residents and businesses. However, we rely on the continued co-operation from our customers in order to minimise power supply interruptions.”
