Dating back to 2002, the challenge has become more than a competition. It is a fun day where all the novice (new player) and seasoned bowlers come together to socialise over great games and a braai.

Honeydew Bowling Club has dominated the challenge by winning it nine times over Randburg Bowls Club’s three. Orla Guilfoyle, of Honeydew, explained that the clubs have always had a special relationship, despite being in two different districts. Randburg is under the Johannesburg Bowling Association and Honeydew under Sables Bowls.

“We don’t normally play against each other in the leagues. When our greens are closed for maintenance we go to them and play, and they come to us when they close. We’ve always had a close relationship, and in 2002 we decided to start the challenge.”

Guilfoyle added that it is a great achievement that they won the challenge again, but it makes it more competitive for the next year.

Honeydew’s president Tony Nadel confirmed that there were 96 players who participated, and they had full support from both clubs. “We had fun. Everybody is happy. This has been a long going challenge and it has built a good comradery in the sport. Great friendship has been built, and members always look forward to it.”

Connie Matthews, a novice from Randburg, said that they are getting closer to winning the challenge. “It’s been fantastic to play here. We love playing here and Honeydew members welcome us well. The games were close, and we are getting closer and closer. Hopefully next year we can win it.”
