JMPD seize two vehicles caught in the act of illegal dumping in Kya Sands

In a major victory for residents in Randburg and Fourways, JMPD has caught trucks dumping waste at a closed landfill site in Kya Sands. This comes after months of health and environmental concerns from residents.

Public Safety MMC Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, accompanied by JMPD officers, conducted a targeted inspection of an illegal dumping site in Kya Sands, leading to two vehicles being caught in the act of illegal dumping on October 16.

Tshwaku admits the site had been officially closed by the city. Despite this, trucks continue to arrive and illegally dump waste at the location, which was shut down several years ago.

“We have confiscated five trucks without valid permits; some didn’t have proper licensing, and others are not road-worthy. Nobody is allowed to dump waste here because this landfill is closed by the city. So we are going to enforce these bylaws as we have said and they are going to be enforced.”

JMPD’s Superintendent, Xolani Fihla said to address the ongoing problem of bylaw transgressions, the JMPD will deploy dedicated units to conduct regular patrols and inspections throughout the city.

“These teams will take appropriate enforcement action when necessary and this includes issuing citations and impoundments. We urge all residents, businesses, and community organisations to familiarise themselves with the City’s Bylaws and to play a responsible role in maintaining a clean and safe environment.”

Fihla said they intensified their efforts to combat the transgression of City Bylaws, especially illegal dumping adding that the two-vehicle owners have been instructed to contact the Public Safety Department to explain their actions.

This comes after residents in several areas of Randburg and Fourways have raised health concerns as they have been enduring months of suffering, unable to breathe freely due to the smoke coming from illegal dumping activities.

One of the residents Keith Elliott, initiated a campaign under the The Kya Sand Burning Wasteland Community Forum Non-Profit Company, to take legal action against the city, and their initial victory marked the first step in their battle against this pressing issue.

They’ve also submitted letters to President Cyril Ramaphosa to express their desperation to breathe and call for help.
