Golden Harvest Park bridge remains unrepaired for over two years

Golden Harvest Park’s pedestrian bridge has been inaccessible for more than two years, prompting calls for engineers and builders to volunteer in restoring the vital structure.

A pedestrian bridge in Golden Harvest Park, once a popular route for runners, cyclists, and parkgoers, has been in disrepair for over two years. The bridge, which spans a waterway feeding into the park’s lake, was torn apart by water currents during heavy rainfall, making it unsafe and inaccessible.

Golden Harvest Park manager Mike Marcie explained that the situation has been ongoing and that the park needs help from the community to restore the bridge. “We need assistance from residents, especially engineers or builders, to help survey the damage and determine what’s needed to fix it. It’s a vital structure for the park’s users, and it has been missed by many,” said Marcie.

The bridge had been a key part of the park’s scenic routes, particularly for cyclists like Hein Hattingh, a resident who regularly cycled through the area. Hattingh expressed frustration over the lack of progress. “This was one of the most beautiful routes to cycle through, but I haven’t been able to use it for over two years now. There’s been no visible effort to fix it, and I’ve had to change my entire cycling routine because of this.”

The community’s patience is running thin, with many calling for action to be taken to repair the bridge. Johannesburg City Parks has been notified and has escalated the issue to the relevant departments. While they investigate, locals are hoping for a quicker solution through volunteer efforts.
