Phakama Mhlali, a movement made up of Cosmo City residents, took to the streets to voice their concerns through a peaceful march and the handing over of a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu.
Their memorandum outlined several critical issues, including the rezoning of certain lands, which they believe are essential for the betterment of the community.
Patrick Faleni, chairperson of the movement, explained that they have given the speaker a period of seven to 14 working days to respond to the demands and the issues raised.
“As we await feedback, it is crucial for us to remain united and resolute. A divided house cannot stand, and our strength lies in our solidarity. We would like to take this moment to reflect on and applaud the tremendous work we have accomplished together.”
Faleni said that it’s inspiring to see such community-driven efforts to address important issues like land rezoning and other concerns.

“Our journey is far from over. Our collaborative efforts will be critical as we continue to strive for our mission. It is evident that we can no longer wait for change; we must be the change we wish to see. Together, we will continue to push forward for a better future for Cosmo City.”
He urged residents to stay united and continue supporting each other while waiting to hear back from the speaker.
“Special recognition goes to the individuals who were at the forefront of this movement, dedicating their time and financial resources to ensure the success of this event. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and are deeply appreciated.”
According to Faleni, Mthembu has committed to visiting Cosmo City on October 11 to discuss the resident’s concerns.
