Rand Park High Grade 8s plant a tree as a symbol of growth and legacy

Rand Park High School’s Grade 8 learners participated in their annual tree-planting ceremony, symbolising their journey through high school and fostering environmental awareness in a meaningful tradition.

Rand Park High School’s annual tree-planting ceremony was held on September 5 during a special assembly where Grade 8 learners participated in this meaningful tradition.
The ceremony saw class representatives plant an indigenous paperbark thorn tree (acacia sieberiana) on the embankment of the school’s main field.

This tradition, which began in 2015, symbolises the start of the Grade 8 learners’ journey at Rand Park. As the learners progress through their high school years, the tree will grow alongside them, representing their development both academically and personally.

The learners were reminded of the importance of planting trees for future generations. Trees improve air quality by producing oxygen and play a vital role in creating a healthier environment. Understanding the value of trees is essential, as they are our lifeline to cleaner air and a better planet.

Grade 8 dean and deputy principal Tracy Workman-Davies believes that creating environmental awareness is an important part of the school’s teachers’ mandate. “By planting trees with the Grade 8 learners, we encourage them to conserve and enhance the natural environment we find ourselves in and we teach them about leaving a living legacy,” she said.
“The learners will watch the trees grow as they progress through the grades at Rand Park High School, and will leave knowing that they have left a tangible legacy of their time at our school.”

In addition to fostering environmental consciousness, the tree-planting ceremony promotes unity and belonging among the learners. It marks a shared moment where each Grade 8 class can collectively contribute to something that will grow long after graduation.

This tradition helps learners feel connected not only to their peers but also to the school’s values of sustainability and stewardship of the environment. It serves as a reminder of the school’s commitment to promoting green spaces within the community. As Rand Park High continues to plant trees annually, the campus has gradually become a greener, more welcoming environment.

These efforts reflect the school’s broader mission to create well-rounded individuals who are mindful of their surroundings and take responsibility for the world they are inheriting.

As the learners watch the tree grow through the years, it will serve as a lasting reminder of their time at Rand Park High School. They will leave behind more than memories, they will leave behind a tangible legacy for future generations to appreciate.
