Gauteng SAPS holds a ceremony in remembrance of officers that paid the ultimate price

The Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) held an emotional commemorative ceremony at the Linden SAPS Garden of Remembrance to honor ten police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 2023/2024 financial year.

The event, led by provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, served as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave individuals in their commitment to protecting the community.

In his address, Mthombeni emphasised the significance of remembering these fallen heroes, stating, “this is a symbol to say that our fallen heroes are not forgotten. They fought for this country, and it is something important that we do yearly.”

His remarks highlighted the dedication and courage exhibited by police officers who face danger daily to uphold the law and ensure public safety.

The Gauteng employee health and wellness commander, Colonel Sally Govender, echoed Mthombeni’s sentiments, stressing the importance of providing these officers with the dignity and respect they deserve.

“They laid down their lives due to their commitment to the country and for the oath of service that they made,” Govender said. She praised the bravery of the officers, noting that they chose to confront criminals rather than retreat in fear.

The ceremony also featured participation from local schools, where students released doves as a symbol of peace and remembrance.

Schools such as Linden Höerskool, Pinnacle College Linden, The Kings School Robinhills, Curro Victory Park, King David Victory Park, De La Salle Holy Cross College, and others were represented, showcasing community support for the police force.

Annelize Tichauer, chairperson of the Linden Community Policing Forum (CPF), expressed her appreciation for the youth’s involvement, stating, “it was beautiful for me to see the youth engaging in the future of a safe province whilst remembering and paying respects to those who gave it all.”

The ceremony not only honored the memory of the fallen officers but also reinforced the ongoing legacy of bravery and service within the SAPS. As Mthombeni concluded, the commitment to preventing and detecting crime remains steadfast, with officers dedicated to their calling and the protection of their communities.
