Ward councillor is concerned about traffic on Northumberland Avenue

Devon Steenkamp wants provincial government to make plans for the high traffic volume on Northumberland Avenue.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp is concerned about the high traffic volumes on Northumberland Avenue, especially near the SPCA Randburg entrance.

He recently conducted an on-site visit outside the SPCA and addressed pressing community safety concerns on a provincial road that sees high traffic volumes, especially during peak hours.

Steenkamp explained that during the visit, they discussed the need for increased safety signage along the road and the possibility of advocating for a traffic light intersection on Felstead Road, which would greatly improve safety for all road users.

Additionally, they are exploring options to smooth out the entrance in front of the Randburg SPCA and considering the feasibility of adding extra turning lanes to enhance traffic flow and safety.

“Over the coming weeks, I will be engaging with the relevant stakeholders to find a practical and effective way forward on these matters. A special thank you to a resident, Lydia, for bringing these issues to my attention and for her continued commitment to improving our community.”

Cynthia Swanepoel, the kennel manager at Randburg SPCA, said that it would be amazing to have a proper road to drive that is safe for everyone.

“We need proper road signs and paved road; it would be amazing to see if this could happen as we have had so many issues in the past with the entrance to the SPCA. This road is always busy as it goes towards the highway. The cars slow down to turn into the SPCA and that has caused accidents.”

She added that it very hard to enter and exit the SPCA as people drive past at an enormous speed.

“I have seen too many accidents on this road, including one of our staff members because people don’t slow down. We are concerned about the safety for the cars and, ultimately, the animals. This road is extremely busy and far too many accidents happen.”

Steenkamp confirmed that he has invited the provincial government to come and look at the issue and make plans for the future.
