Samuel Ogualu’s journey from soccer to scrum

After switching from soccer to rugby this year, Samuel Ogualu has found his calling at Diggers Rugby Club, aiming to become a professional player.

Samuel Ogualu’s journey into rugby began in March this year. After years of playing soccer, he decided to try something new. “I knew I had to find a way to make sure my parents and the rest of my family were sorted, and that I would end the suffering of finances,” Samuel says. His inspiration to take up rugby came from Siya Kolisi, the South African rugby captain whose story of rising from humble beginnings resonates deeply with him.

Joining Diggers Rugby Club was a decision that has left Samuel with no regrets. “Diggers Rugby is the best rugby club. They are a family, not just a team of individuals,” he explains. He is part of the U19 team, though he is still 18 years old. “They make me feel accepted. I depend on them, and they depend on me,” Samuel adds, speaking highly of the team spirit that defines Diggers.

Despite his relative inexperience, Samuel’s commitment to the sport is already evident. His weekly schedule is packed with training, balancing two club practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays with regular gym sessions at Virgin Active Northgate. “We usually have a game on Saturdays,” he says, describing a busy week in which he rarely has a day off. For Samuel, rugby is not just a game – it’s a way of life. His faith plays a big role in his preparation and mental toughness. “I pray. When I pray, I feel like I can do anything. The verse I use is Philippians 4:13.”

Samuel’s progress in the sport has not gone unnoticed. He recently trialled for the Lions Rugby Club’s Inter-Provincial Team. Although he narrowly missed out on selection, he remains undeterred. “I will go again next year,” he states confidently. His resilience in the face of setbacks is a reflection of his larger goals. Samuel hopes to join a rugby institute next year after completing matric, and within five years, he aims to become a professional player.

Like any athlete, Samuel has faced challenges. A recent injury was a major setback, but it only strengthened his resolve. “It really upset me, but I came back stronger than before. Now, I’m ready for what’s ahead,” he shares. His focus now is on improving his scrumming, which he sees as a crucial part of his development. “I want my scrumming to be top tier – that would make me an immovable object.”

Outside of rugby, Samuel enjoys spending time with friends and gaming. These moments of relaxation help him find balance amid the pressures of school and sports. He also sees rugby as more than just a physical challenge – it’s been a source of life lessons. “Rugby has taught me that anyone can do anything as long as you set your mind to it.”

For those who doubt their abilities or face challenges in their pursuits, Samuel has some advice: “Don’t give up. Me being the new guy, and also someone who just started, people doubted me… But that didn’t change the fact that I was able to do what I love doing the most: playing rugby. So, just keep pushing and praying anything is possible.”

As Samuel Ogualu continues to chase his rugby dreams, one thing is clear: his passion, faith, and determination are driving him forward on and off the pitch.
