KhulaLGT brings spelling bee to Cosmo City schools

Hlengiwe Matane said she appreciates the schools for opening their doors and trusting them to do what's best for their kids

Khula LGT (Let’s Grow Together), a local non-profit organization (NPO), invited and hosted five schools from Cosmo City and surrounding areas to compete in a spelling bee, with 51 children participating at Cosmo City’s Multipurpose Centre.

The schools that participated in this event were Cosmo City Primary No. 1, Meridian Primary School, Nooitgedacht Primary School, Tirisano-Mmogo Primary School, and Boipuso School.

The event was aimed at building the learners’ confidence, empowering their future leaders, and uplifting the community.

Chairperson and founder of the NPO Hlengiwe Ntamane explained that they selected the schools in the township because they want to build the community, give hope, and empower them. It is rare to find schools in a township giving the kids such an opportunity to shine.

“We are very proud of our young future leaders for partaking in this edutainment. We wanted to give them a platform to shine and help improve. Promoting educational activities is one of the things we aim to do as Khula and lend a helping hand to the teachers and parents in our community.”

The winner was a Grade 6 learner Omolemo Tladi from Meridian Primary School, with Ayabonga Madonsela from Tirisano-Mmogo Primary School in second place, and Rorisang Kunoane from Meridian Primary School in third.

There were various prizes to be won, including trophies, certificates, medals, and gift vouchers.

“It was a beautiful day; all the kids that were selected from these schools showed up and were excited, empowered, and encouraged, and it was a beautiful experience for some of them who have never partaken in this type of edutainment. Teachers, parents, and the community supported our young stars on the day and that’s what we call success.”

The event was well attended and supported by the community. Ntamane thanked the partners and sponsors for reaching out to assist and caring for the young future leaders.

“A special thanks to our judges for an incredible job they have done. Our guest speakers, teachers, parents, supporters, volunteers, and the community at large for supporting this successful event.”

Romans Pizza Cosmo Mall, Cosmo FM, Karisan IT, Postnet Dainfern, Sun International (The Maslow Hotel), Cash Crusaders Cosmo Mall, Just Shoes Cosmo Mall, Ice Rink Northgate, DM Creationz, Boxer Cosmo Mall, and LM Designs sponsored the event.

“This was a big event compared to last year. It was more demanding and exciting. 5 schools compared to the 3 we hosted last year was amazing. 51 kids was a major upgrade, also more stakeholders were interested in partaking in this event, which is awesome. The top 3 had their first radio experience, which was heartwarming,” added Matane.
