Phola celebrates women in style

Mental health organisation Phola brought women together to celebrate Women's Month.

Phola Psychosocial and Mental Health Organisation hosted a significant Women’s Month celebration at their office grounds in Ferndale, bringing together over 60 women from Diepsloot, Orange Farm, Cosmo City, Zandspruit, and Lion Park.

These women, who are beneficiaries of various Phola programmes, including the Victim Empowerment programme funded by the Department of Social Development and the Courage programmes funded by GBV-F, gathered to honour and reflect on their journeys.

The event was enriched by the presence of key stakeholders. Representatives from Werksmans Attorneys provided helpful insights into the latest developments in domestic violence laws and offered legal advice. Additionally, Mohanoe Inc. attorneys shared important information on divorce, settlements, and family wills, empowering the women with knowledge to navigate these complex issues.

Throughout the event, women shared personal testimonies and prepared items, creating a supportive and inspiring atmosphere. In recognition of their courage and resilience, each guest was gifted a food hamper by Phola, symbolising the organisation’s commitment to their well-being.

Carren Liando of Phola explained that their women of courage were empowered with increased knowledge on new domestic violence acts, informed on customary laws, and equipped with legal advice.

The celebration not only highlighted the strength and unity of the women involved but also underscored Phola’s ongoing dedication to supporting and empowering women through its various psychosocial and mental health programmes.

Liando praised this year’s event saying it surpassed expectations, doubling their usual attendance of 30 women to a remarkable turnout.

“Our beneficiaries participated in unprecedented numbers, making it our most successful event yet. We are actually thrilled to see such growth and engagement, indicating a clear need for our support services. Our women’s event sparked lasting enthusiasm; we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback via WhatsApp groups and social media, with praise continuing to pour in even today. This outpouring of appreciation fills us with pride and reinforces our organisation’s impact and value.”
