Armed suspects driving a wanted vehicle disappear in Randburg

Developing Story: Fortunately, there are no recorded fatalities in the devastating incident

Jan Smuts Avenue was a buzz of activity earlier this afternoon, with private security, police, and JMPD vehicles racing towards Randburg.

The cause of the commotion was when Vision Tactical Security was forced to make a call for backup in Saxonwold at approximately 11:30 on August 23 following a shootout with suspects driving a wanted silver Audi.

The suspect’s vehicle caused suspicion after the Vision Tactical team ran it through Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) and found it as ‘wanted’.  When members approached the silver Audi, occupants opened fire with an AK47, hitting the security vehicle while narrowly missing members.

The Audi fled down Jan Smuts Avenue, trying to evade capture. Authorities lost the suspects in the Randburg CBD.  SCP Security recovered the abandoned vehicle at approximately 12:00, at the Randburg Taxi rank. The suspects are still on the run.

“We are relieved to report that all our team members are safe and unharmed,” the Vision Tactical’s social media statement read. “During the chase, the suspects opened fire on our members with rifles. Together with law enforcement, we are actively searching for those involved.

“This incident highlights the ongoing risks our teams face to ensure public safety,” the statement concluded.

Johannesburg district police spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora was contacted for more information on this developing story.  Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
