Action cricketer puts on a good performance at the Interprovincial tournament

Jorden Hiepner said that he loves every aspect of the cricket game, especially the teammates and coaches.

Hoërskool Randburg indoor cricketer Jorden Hiepner represented the U18 North-Western Gauteng (NWG) action cricket team at the action cricket Inter-Provincials.

NWG are the U18 gold champions, and he stepped out as Gold Final Player of the Match and achieved top-nine player.

He explained that the coach noticed him and asked him to go for the trials. “I decided to give it a shot and made the team. I am very proud of this achievement, and blessed to perform at a competitive level and able to contribute to the team’s performance in the tournament.”

He added that he was extremely proud of being named player of the match. “It felt like I was on top of the world. I know that without my fellow teammates, and Coach Bertus Koekemoer, this was not possible.”

Jorden has been fortunate enough to have been exposed to some good cricket coaches at his outdoor club, Pirates, and this helped him refine the skills required to contribute to the indoor team.

“I started playing indoor cricket socially three years ago during the outdoor off-season. I have been able to refine my batting skills and I believe I am a decent all-rounder. My exposure to indoor it improved my ability to bowl tight lines and lengths, and with the bat, play the ball as late as possible. It also sharpened my fielding as you have to pre-empt every ball in the field.”

He added that if you love the game and enjoy playing, it does not feel like hard work. “You have to be dedicated and be committed to practice and get as much game time as possible. My parents have to remind me constantly that I have to balance academics and sports.

“During the day I focus on my schoolwork; indoor cricket only starts at 18:30 and allows me to balance my sport and school effectively. Academics take preference and should never be neglected.”

Jorden is inspired by Bertus Koekemoer, Gerhardus Diedericks, AB de Villiers, and Dale Steyn. He hopes to play at the highest possible competitive level and represent the country one day at the Cricket World Cup.
