Community spirit shines at Randburg Harriers Challenge 2024

Runners from across Randburg and beyond gathered on Sunday for the Randburg Harriers Challenge, enjoying a well-organised race and lively post-event celebrations.

Randburg was the place to be as runners flocked to the Randburg Harriers Challenge, held in association with Discovery Vitality. This event marked the third race in the five-race Vitality Run Series and attracted over 5 000 participants, all eager to take on the challenge of the Randburg hills.

The race offered three distances – 5km, 10km, and 21km, catering to both casual runners and serious athletes. The route was well-patrolled by marshals and members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), ensuring that all participants were safe and motivated throughout the race.

Thanks to the support of sponsors like Oasis Water, Accelerit Fibre, Sportsmans Warehouse, and Switch Energy Drink, runners were well-hydrated and energised at the six water points along the route. Local running clubs, including Manoni, RAC, and WCAC, also played a significant role in supporting the event and keeping spirits high.

Upon crossing the finish line, each participant received a medal, while the top three runners in each age category were awarded cash prizes. The positive atmosphere extended beyond the race, as the Randburg Harriers hosted a lively post-race party. With food and drinks from various vendors and music from DJ Cheezy and DJ Ash, many runners stayed long after the race to celebrate and catch up with friends. Some even hit the dance floor to stretch their legs after the morning’s exertions.

Reflecting on the event, Buwi Moeketsi was pleased with the success, noting an increase in both entries and actual starters compared to the previous year. While organising a race in a residential area always presents challenges, their experience ensures smooth operations. “The runners who choose our race are aware of the hilly route and come well prepared for the challenge,” Moeketsi shared.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the race and post-race festivities. Any constructive criticism will be taken into account to improve future races, demonstrating the organisers’ commitment to making each year’s event better than the last.
