SPCA rescues cattle on Witkoppen Road in midnight mission
Braving harsh winter conditions, SPCA employees successfully rescued and walked seven stranded cattle to safety, showcasing extraordinary determination and commitment to animal welfare.
In a testament to the power of determination, the difference between the impossible and the possible was vividly demonstrated on July 9.
On what felt like the coldest winter night, Randburg SPCA staff responded to a distress call about roaming cattle at about 22:30.
Upon arrival at the scene on Witkoppen Road, they found seven cows, including some calves, and sadly, one cow that had been fatally struck by a car.
The team faced the daunting challenge of transporting the cattle back to the SPCA without suitable transportation. Despite numerous calls to security companies, no immediate solution was available.
However, the SPCA employees, driven by an unyielding resolve to protect the animals, decided to walk the cattle back to the SPCA.
Escorted by security personnel from TRSS, Amor Security, SB Security, and Stryka Security, the team began their slow, arduous journey through the freezing night. The biting wind and frigid temperatures made the trek especially gruelling, but the dedicated staff persisted, ensuring the cattle’s safety every step of the way.
Staff member Gift Shumba said it was a very difficult task especially because of the cold, but after a long, exhausting night, the team completed their mission.
The kennel manager Cynthia Swanepoel said, “They are not in the best condition, one has a sore leg and the other a lump, but our vet is treating them. The animals are now receiving the necessary veterinary care, nutritious food, and a haven to rest and recover. They will be dewormed and checked.”
The SPCA expressed heartfelt gratitude to the security companies that assisted in this challenging operation. A special acknowledgement was given to staff members Gift Shumba, Molefe Mosanagi, and Theo Mahube, whose exceptional commitment and spirit of animal rescue shone brightly and their unwavering dedication ensured the safety and well-being of the stranded cattle.
