Afterskool Is Lit programme develops new skills

Afterskool Is Lit in collaboration with other stakeholders help young people discover other skills and knowledge outside the classrooms.

Cosmo City schools competed in an edutainment programme hosted by Afterskool Is Lit, in collaboration with Green Development Foundation (GDF), and other stakeholders.

There were various activities and competitions, including a Spelling Bee competition, dance, choirs, netball, and soccer at the event held at Sgodiphola Secondary School.

Learners gather to support the Afterskool Is Lit event.

Director Sifisokuhle Mkwanazi explained that the purpose of the event was to help young people develop their skills, knowledge, and values. They also need to become productive, responsible, and engaging citizens, who can contribute to the growth and well-being of their communities.

These programmes assist learners to become confident and able to face any challenges.

“We are planning to grow the organisation and work with all the schools that are in need. Not all students are smart in class and with a proven record most successful role models made it without a higher qualification. We are asking as youth to be allowed our freedom of participating in activities we love and get the support we need.”

Learners get ready to compete.

Mkwanazi added that the only challenges they are facing is political as some schools and leaders in communities deny them a chance to teach the youth with these programmes.

“Not all the schools support such initiatives – we are hoping the principals and teachers can start to work together to assist students with the development of their life skills, creative skills, and their talents. All the students who participate wish they could have these opportunities more often to help them grow more confident and able to deal with challenges.”

The organisation has been focusing on Cosmo City schools since 2019 and is willing to reach out to many other schools who see a need for their Where Healthy Activations Transform Society (Whats) events.

It was excitement all over at the Afterskool Is Lit event.
