Vox pop: Residents react to the tariff increase

Residents of Randburg express their concern about the City of Johannesburg's tariff increase.

The City of Johannesburg recently increased its tariffs for all services from water to electricity and sanitation.

The paper spoke to residents and asked them how they felt about needing to pay more for utilities. These were their responses …

Jesicca Mahlangu: Tariff increase comes with a cost. This has added to the already high cost of living, making it difficult for people to make ends meet. I feel that the increase is unaffordable and will only lead to poverty and corruption in our country.
Moshe Ragophala: While I understand the frustration, I believe the tariff increase could be a positive step if it is directed towards improving infrastructure and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Luciano Jacobs: The tariff increase is tough to swallow. On my salary, any additional expense makes budgeting more challenging. I understand the need for improvements and maintenance, but it feels like the burden always falls on the residents.
Kuenen Naiker
: I’m really worried about the tariff increase. As a small business owner, every cent counts. This increase means higher operating costs, which might force me to raise my prices.
