Local businesses unite to transform math education in Cosmo City

Through the Bricks Campaign, businesses in Cosmo City have demonstrated their commitment to corporate social responsibility by sponsoring a transformative math education programme, benefitting both teachers and students.

In a heartening display of community spirit and dedication to education, businesses in and around Cosmo City have come together to support local learners and teachers.

Recognising the critical role of mathematics in driving the country’s economic growth, these businesses have united through the innovative Bricks Campaign to invest in the education of Cosmo City Junior Primary School and Cosmo City Primary School No. 1.

Kabelo Kgosana, a representative of My Math Buddy, said that mathematics forms the foundation of a thriving economy, promoting sectors from engineering and technology to finance and research and that by strengthening math education.

The ‘My Math Buddy One Book One Learner’ project, an initiative by the South African Mathematics Foundation, was launched to empower math teachers with the skills to make their teaching effective, ultimately helping their learners excel in the subject. Ten math teachers have been sponsored and this has enabled them to deliver high-quality maths instruction and inspire a passion for the subject among their students.

Michael Lepedi, a Grade 6 math teacher also from Cosmo City Junior Primary School said, “I learned how to best simplify math words and their origin. I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to identify frustrated learners in maths and the cause thereof. I have gained strategies on how to make maths more interesting. I have realised that maths is deeper than our textbooks. In conclusion, the seminar was an eye-opener for the realisation of different ways to help my learners to become better at maths.”
