Blairgowrie-based Gouws Motorsport aims to become best race car manufacturer

Gouws Motorsport's JForce Formula Vee race car displayed positive improvements at Zwartkops Raceway after a set back at Kyalami.

Blairgowrie-based Gouws Motorsport’s JForce Formula Vee race car had a promising performance at Zwartkops Raceway led by driver Johan Gouws Junior and car creator Johan Gouws Senior.

Gouws Jnr re-familiarised himself with the car during practice sessions after an 11-year hiatus. Despite a cold track affecting pace, he impressively qualified third. Race one saw him briefly in second place before finishing sixth due to the car being 35kg overweight.

Race two included a near-collision and an oversteer incident, resulting in a ninth-place finish – overall, it was a positive improvement from Kyalami.

He explained that his performance was not as good as it could have been. “I am very rusty, especially with race craft and wheel-to-wheel battles, but this will come the more laps I turn. It was an absolutely phenomenal experience. It was 11 years since I raced with the guys, but it felt as if I never left.”

The journey of the JForce Formula Vee race car began with a deep passion for motorsport and a vision to build a competitive race car from the ground up. The car, representing over 10 000 hours of dedication, features innovative elements such as the first and only single-seater equipped with a halo for enhanced safety.

Following setbacks at Kyalami Raceway, the performance at Zwartkops highlighted the car’s potential and competitiveness.

“I am super proud of the car. In its second race weekend, we were able to easily fight for the top five. We know we now need to shed 35kg before the next race which should allow us to fight for the top step of the podium.”

Gouws Jnr admitted that he is not in his 20s anymore, the body is not what it used to be, and he definitely needs to step up his fitness training big time.

“Me and the car are both going on a weight loss journey so that we can be on the minimum allowed weight at Round six of the Extreme Festival at Zwartkops on September 14. We extend heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support and motivation. Special thanks go to our sponsors: Arcanjo Printer Repairs, Advanced Fastening Systems, and Ja.co Engineering. Their support is invaluable.”
