Creative student video competition showcases the essence of student life

Noluthando Kolomba explained that she enjoyed taking and editing the footage to tell her story.

Second-year student at IIE-Vega in Bordeaux Noluthando Kolomba took home a R1 000 Takealot voucher after winning the recent vibrant My Time at IIE-Vega competition.

The competition provided student creators with a platform to showcase the unique elements that set their IIE-Vega experience apart in line with collaborating and co-creating with its student body.

They were provided with a brief to submit a one-minute creative video reflecting their student experience at IIE-Vega. Each submission embraced the profound impact of student life beyond the lecture room.

Kolomba said, “To be honest, l did not think l was going to win but my friend had so much faith in me. When l found out l had won l was very happy, excited and proud. It really did take a lot of hard work as l wanted it to be a different video and show every aspect as a Vega student. It took creativity, dedication, thinking outside the box and patience.”

She added that her work was different because she used her own experience with Vega and not everyone’s general experience at Vega.

“With an individual experience, it creates ‘a difference’ and not what is expected, for example when l come to school the security guard is more than just someone who is checking your student card but a friend with warm greetings and motivation.”

The video is about Kolomba who moved from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg to study at IIE-Vega School, where she experienced significant growth. Starting with a higher certificate, she made lasting friendships and graduated with distinctions.

Now in her second year of digital marketing, she continues to expand her skills with support from the library and wellness navigator. Vega has become her second home, preparing her well for the future.

“What l focused on is my own personal and academic journey at the school highlighting my growth, achievements and support from the school community.”

Held at the Pretoria, and Cape Town campuses, the competition effectively celebrated the essence of student life, the lifelong friendships formed as well as pivotal moments which define students’ tertiary journey.

Gaylene Olivier, customer experience manager at IIE-Vega, explained that the years the students set aside for tertiary education represent time invested in their futures. This formative period inspires individuals to develop a sense of self as citizens of change which is paramount in preparing them to navigate a complex world, full of uncertainty and ambiguity.

“Competitions like My Time at IIE-Vega are opportunities to celebrate, among other things, the essence of student lifelong friendships and they also applaud the daily commitment required both within and beyond the lecture room.”

Amahle Khanyile and Yandiswa Dlamini won at Cape Town campus. Palesa Ngwenya and Ziyanda Zama jointly submitted a combined video and won in Pretoria.
