Bordeaux boxer Vusi Ngcamu clinched the Gauteng Junior Featherweight Title in a spectacular 10-round fight beating the undefeated Bheki Maitse under the Boxing 5 Promotions banner at the Booysens Boxing Camp.
Ngcamu won on a split decision in an action-packed fight in front of a thrilling crowd. He also received the Fight of the Night Belt together with the newly introduced Gauteng Junior Featherweight Title Belt.
Ngcamu who trains at the Alan Toweel Boxing Gym in Linden said, “The first round was technical and he was hard to find. The fight started to change in the second round when I caught him. I could see that he felt my punches. I won the fight clean and if I wanted to knock him out, I would have.
“The people who doubted me now know that I am ready for any fight and any title challenge.”
Ngcamu wants to challenge the South Africa Junior Featherweight Title holder, Bongani Mahlangu who is the father of Maitse.
“I want nobody but Mahlangu. I have been calling him out. I want him and everyone can see that it will be a big fight. In the division, I am the only one who is calling for him, others are scared. I want to fight him and retire him.”
Ngcamu joined Alan Toweel Boxing Gym nine years ago. During that time, he had an up-and-down career and then disappeared for almost three years. About two years ago, he contacted Toweel to ask if they could get back together.
Toweel said he was reluctant at first but had a change of heart.
“Vusi has a new outlook on life,” said Toweel. “He is empowered, disciplined and ready to move to the next level in South African boxing. Vusi is ready for the SA Junior Featherweight Title. The moral of the story is that no matter how low one goes in life, you can resurrect yourself and move to a better place. He has just done that, of which we are proud.”
