Learners explore the ocean in virtual reality

EdTech teacher Irene Angelopoulos said learners explored the ocean depths and interacted with marine life.

Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge Pre-Primary buzzed with excitement as Grade 0 and Grade 00 learners embarked on a unique educational journey with the VR Education team.
The in-visit outing featured ‘The Aquarium’, a virtual reality (VR) experience that brought the wonders of the ocean right into the classroom.

EdTech teacher Irene Angelopoulos shared her enthusiasm about the event. “The recent visit by the VR Education team marked a significant milestone in our pre-primary school’s curriculum. The objective of the visit was to provide an immersive learning experience using cutting-edge VR technology.”

The integration of VR into the school’s curriculum particularly enhanced their current enquiry theme ‘Under the sea.’ Angelopoulos explained, “The VR experience enabled young learners to explore the ocean depths, interact with marine life, and gain a vivid understanding of aquatic ecosystems. This hands-on, immersive approach complemented traditional teaching methods, providing a multifaceted educational experience.”

The visit aimed to achieve several key educational objectives. “The primary objectives were multifaceted. First, to enhance student engagement and motivation through innovative as well as interactive learning experiences. It also fosters curiosity and a passion for learning by allowing students to explore diverse environments in a controlled, virtual setting.”

The VR technology also catered to various learning styles, providing an inclusive educational experience. “The visit especially supported visual and kinesthetic learning styles by providing experiences that go beyond traditional classroom teaching.” She added the visit aided in the development of fine motor skills and spatial awareness.

The response from the young learners was overwhelmingly positive. “The pre-primary learners responded to the VR technology with great enthusiasm and curiosity. Many children were particularly fascinated by the lifelike visuals and the ability to explore new environments without leaving the classroom.”

Looking to the future, the school is eager to expand its use of EdTech initiatives. “We aim to explore additional VR models that align with other curriculum enquiries, such as dinosaur exploration.”

Reflecting on the success of the VR integration, Angelopoulos said, “The integration of VR technology into our pre-primary curriculum has been a transformative and enriching experience, therefore we are committed to exploring further innovative educational technologies to enhance our students’ learning journey.”
