SPCA need blankets to keep animals warm

The Randburg SPCA kennel manager, Cynthia Swanepoel, explained that they are always in need of blankets and bedding.

As the cold weather creeps in and winter approaches, the Randburg SPCA has called on the community to donate blankets and advised pet owners to keep their furry friends warm.

The Randburg SPCA kennel manager, Cynthia Swanepoel, explained that people often believe that animals do not get cold. She busted this myth by saying, “If you are cold, so are they. Kennels, beds and blankets protect them against the elements.”

Swanepoel shared the challenges the SPCA faces during the colder season. “Winter is always not nice and with us, we are always in need of blankets and bedding We try our best to keep the animals warm. We close the front of the kennels as well with plastic sheets to help with the rain and cold wind.
We cover the kennels with sheets of hard plastic and blankets.”

She explained that ensuring animals’ well-being during cold weather is a top priority. “We always make sure their bedding is clean and dry. No animal wants to sleep on dirty or wet bedding. A lot of people don’t have the funds to go buy a kennel, but you can make a plan to either build or source a kennel type for your animal.”

Swanepoel shared a tip for pet owners who cannot afford to buy a kennel. “You can get a container or an old pool pump cover, put it on a raised surface, and get some cut-off carpet with a bed or bedding.”

To guarantee animals receive proper care at the SPCA, Swanepoel explained that two thorough kennel checks are done every day by a kennel manager. “Each row has a kennel staff member that is responsible for the row. They ensure that bedding, food, and water are provided and make sure the animals are fine. We have a behaviourist with us as well to ensure the dogs and cats are as comfy as possible.”

For pet owners who are not sure how to take care of their pets during the winter season, the SPCA shared the following tips:

  • Make sure your animals have a warm and cosy shelter with extra blankets.
  • Limit the time your pet spends outdoors.
  • Monitor your pet’s water bowls to ensure the water is not frozen.
  • Do not give your pets direct access to heating devices to avoid burns.
  • Closely monitor pets younger than one-year-old, senior pets and those with health conditions.
