Funky Hair Day at Northriding College

Intermediate phase teacher Carryn Croukamp said that a funky hair day gave the students a break from academics and allowed them to have fun.

Northriding College recently held a vibrant and entertaining Funky Hair Day, transforming the school grounds into a showcase of creativity and individuality.

The initiative, led by the Grade 7 class, aimed to raise funds for their highly awaited end-of-year function while providing a refreshing break from the academic intensity of Term 2.

Carryn Croukamp, an intermediate phase teacher at Northriding College, emphasised the significance of this learner-driven event. “The responsibility of raising money for the Grade 7 end-of-year function lies solely with the current Grade 7 class,” she explained. This sense of ownership motivated the students to devise a plan that not only served their financial goals but also enhanced the school’s community spirit.

“Term 2 is a long term, jam-packed with academic content and important June examinations. Our Grade 7s felt that their fellow primary school peers needed a day that would break from the routine of a normal school day and ultimately boost morale through a light-hearted and fun initiative,” Croukamp continued. The event allowed learners to take a breather from academics and take a moment to have fun.

The essence of Funky Hair Day lay in the opportunity it provided for self-expression. “With learners wearing school uniforms every day, our Grade 7s also believed a day like Funky Hair Day would allow their peers to express themselves, and showcase their individuality and creativity through wild and wacky hairstyles.” The school grounds were filled with a variety of creative hairstyles, from rainbow-coloured spikes to braids adorned with glitter and accessories.

Money raised from the event went towards the grade 7’s end-of-year function.

As the Grade 7 learners look forward to their end-of-year celebration, they can take pride in knowing that their initiative not only supported their cause but also brought a wave of positivity and joy to Northriding College.
