Marilyn Apata explained that the challenge they face is getting donations for the care packs, setting up the event and arranging the meals and drinks to ensure that it is the best.

Randburg Rotary Club collaborated with other stakeholders to host a Netball Girls empowerment event at Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit.

Club president Marilyn Apata said the event was attended by approximately130 people including girls, coaches, and Rotary guests and those associated with Impophomo and North Point Church.

The girls participated in the icebreaker activities and powerful declarations on words like ‘I am bold; I am brave; I am confident; I am powerful; I am fearless,’ and many more.

Apata explained that the words we use can set the tone to what we are able to achieve and urged the girls to always use positive affirmations.

She added that the sustainable development goals speak to empowerment of the girl child, which is why the event was significant for the community and in line with International Women’s Day.

“It was good to refresh them on what is important and guide them on the path they should choose. Our girls need to have a positive mindset to believe in what they can become. Thank you to the sponsors who gave items for the care packs and made the event truly special for the girls.

“It breaks my heart to also hear of girls missing school due to not having sanitary supplies. I am calling on those able to donate to reach out to help sponsor the girls.”
