Library and information services explain reduced library hours

The assistant director of library and information services in Region C, Tolakele Makalima, said the reduced hours are a result of labour issues.

In response to enquiries about the operating hours of the Olivedale Library, Tolakele Makalima, assistant director of the library and information services (LIS) in Region C, acknowledged the concerns raised by community members.

This comes after complaints about the limited operating times of the library, which not only affect library goers but also the dedicated group known as the Friends of Olivedale Library (Fools). In the past, the library remained open until 18:00 during the week and 17:00 on Saturdays. However, after Covid-19, the library’s hours were reduced.

Eleanor Woodman, secretary of Fools explained that the limited hours affect children accessing reading materials. “Our leaders always say children should read, that is how they learn, but we need to give them a way to do it because books are expensive, and that is why the library is here”.

Makalima highlighted ongoing labour issues as the primary factor influencing the current schedule. “LIS management is aware of the need to extend operational hours. Currently, the issue is around the unresolved labour issues according to the notices in our facilities dated June 2022. Until this labour issue is resolved, the facility will open as per the new library hours, namely 09:00—17:00, Monday to Friday. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.”

Although the current hours remain, Makalima said that special arrangements have been made for students. “We do however try to accommodate users during the examination period to have the Regional Florida Library operating Saturdays 09:00—17:00 and Sundays 09:00—15:00.”
