Service delivery issues in Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau residents are concerned about the lack of service delivery in their area

Fontainebleau residents are concerned about 6th Avenue, a small street between Maria Street and Blesbok Avenue, that Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) is failing to fix and surface properly.

There were three burst water pipes in the street, first in December 2021, and then two more around April 2022. After it was fixed, they filled it with sand and left it, never coming back to re-tar the road.

Resident Liza van den Bergh explained that they have logged numerous calls between the neighbours and still nothing has happened.

“The last time I logged a call was in June 2023 when they informed me that it would be fixed within seven to ten days, and it is still not fixed. Every time it rains, the sand comes out of the holes and the holes get bigger. Our road is a high priority at this stage.”

George Williams who has been a resident for 75 years also explained that when Joburg Water was fixing the pipe they dug up and left a pile of mud unattended and they had to clean it up themselves.

“If it rains, we cannot drive on this road, the sand they used just comes out if there is a big rainstorm and that causes more problems. We just want the road to be re-tarred, it’s been a long time.”

The residents are also concerned about the growing illegal dumping issue in the area and around the area of Robin Hills.

Despite numerous attempts to contact JRA we were not successful. Questions on why they haven’t fixed the road and why it is taking this long to work on the problem were sent on January 12. No response was received by the time we went to print; however, it will be published once it becomes available.

Van den Bergh has also escalated the matter to Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum), urban inspector Nalini Ramsoonder who also called out the relevant entities. JRA, to fix the road, and City Parks to collect the illegal dumping. From November 2023 there is still no response from the entities.
