How to cope with the festive season when you are alone

You do not have to be alone this Christmas, here are some ways to connect with people. If you do wish to be alone, here are some things you can do.

If you don’t have any family or friends to spend Christmas with, it is easy to feel lonely.

Especially if you have lost people – the holiday season can easily remind you of their passing.
So if you are looking to make new friends or spend time with like-minded people, various religious organisations and community groups often hold gatherings over the festive season.

Non-profit organisations and charities also hold events for the less fortunate and volunteering at one of these is a great way to meet people and have fun together.
And if you really can’t find anything that interests you, ask your neighbours what their plans are. Chances are, someone else may also be facing spending Christmas alone and they would appreciate some company.

Be bold and ask on your community’s WhatsApp or Facebook group if anyone would like to host a braai.
If you just want to be alone, though, we recommend visiting your local park or going on a hike.
Visit the SPCA or an animal welfare organisation and play with a puppy that might have otherwise also spent the day alone.

Likewise, children’s homes also welcome volunteers and visitors during this time.
If you enjoy sport, this Christmas season is a great one to spend in front of the TV.
As always, the Proteas cricketers will be active in December and January, while in soccer the South African Premier Division has matches every odd day
