Velocity FA recognises top performers

Smidt explained that these awards will boost the other players who aren't confident enough for the next season to come back stronger and give it their all.

Velocity Football Academy honoured its youngsters who were outstanding and improved during the 2023 season.

From the ladies’ team, U13, 15 and 17s were given awards for best performances. The awards were for top scorers, most assists, most improved and best team of the year.

Top goal scorer Tshedza Mmbara, coach Lukhanyo Stemele and most improved player Tuso Siziba at the Velocity Awards.

Team manager Velocity coach Aidan de Smidt explained that the ladies’ team have improved in every training session and is dedicated to playing friendlies and doing well.

“2024 will bring big things to Velocity Ladies and looking at entering the league and getting more players to join the team.”

The team had the U13 division for the first time performing in the league. Smidt explained that they weren’t aiming for winning results, but more to improve their skills and by the end of the season it helped as they played extremely well at the end-of-the-year tournament.

“Our U15s had a crazy season, ending third on the log fighting with Wits and Stars of Africa but being consistent at every training session and improving together as a team.”

They also bagged the award for team of the year. The U17s were divided into two teams, A and B.

Velocity U15 players were rewarded at the ceremony.

“Most of our U17 were 16-year-olds and they performed well in the league finishing fifth in the log. They improved a lot at the end of the season by taking a trophy home at a tournament and one of our main focuses is to send them to more tournaments in 2024.”

Smidt confirmed that Velocity will be entering a new league next year called the Championship Development League (CDL). “It is similar to GDL and a lot of good teams will be in there and the likes of Supersport Schools who will film games. That will bring a different atmosphere to the club which we are excited to have.

“We looking to improve our players and being a competing club in the league. We will also want to help our players gain as much experience as possible to help them with their footballing careers.”
