Old Boys enjoys a 2–1 sweet victory against Hoërskool Randburg’ first team
Johan Potgieter said that the games are getting bigger and very intense as the school players are developing very well to be great hockey players.
Randburg Old Boys came back from a goal down to win the 2023 Old Boys Cup 2–1 against Hoërskool Randburg’s first-team hockey.
The youngsters gave the Old Boys a run for their money in the first half. They created opportunities and were very strong and solid at the back. The Old Boys struggled to keep the ball and were forced to play long but their attackers could not trouble the youngsters.
Hoërskool Randburg struck to make 1–0 after a well-played penalty corner that left the old lads standing and watching the ball hits the back of the net.
Hoërskool Randburg coach Marius Kitching explained that his boys played well but there were unlucky.
“We struggled to put the ball in the box but overall we have improved a lot from last year.”
Old Boys came back with a different approach in the second half. Captain Jaco de Kock slot one in to equalise and show the young lads that they still got it. Shortly after, Divan Calldo showed off some beautiful skills, isolated in front but he managed to beat the defenders and gave the Old Boys a well-deserved lead.
The Randburg Old Boys won 2–1 and lifted the 2023 Old Boys Cup.
What started as the learners against teachers and coaches back in 2010 is now being used to help the Hoërskool Randburg hockey teams with their equipment.
Kitching explained that the tournament means a lot to his boys and they appreciate the Old Boys for giving back to the school – it is a big achievement.
Johan Potgieter, one of the founders, explained it all started as the fun games with their old coach in 2010.
“When we won the next year, they wanted revenge the following year and another… That is when everything started.”
The event was bigger this year with the Old Girls and the school’s girls’ team joining as well as the Old Boys second team playing the school’s
U16s.
“From the first event when there were only five supporters, this year was close to 150 people who came to support the games.”
