Zone 3 road closure project to help fight crime

Kevin Hingst stated that it feels surreal that they are finally open, and that seeing the community come together was a rewarding experience.

The newly installed boom gates on Glamour Road and Blairgowrie Drive were officially opened and been put to use by the Blairgowrie Zone 3 Road Closure Committee and Beagle Watch.

The boom gates have free 24-hours access with cameras that will be monitored by Beagle Watch.

Kevin Hingst, chairman of the Blairgowrie Zone 3 Road Closure Committee, explained that crime in the area was increasing and many residents have been affected in the area.

“We see this as a way to reduce the crime rate in our area. What is also great about this is that it is creating a community spirit. With the amount of contributions received from the residents we will be able to improve the parks and make our space good for our community.”

The road-closure process was started four years ago. Hingst explained that they needed a majority of people to vote in favour of the closure and it took a long time to get that process done and they were also interrupted by Covid-19.

“The collecting of the funds to put up the structure was also a challenge. Beagle Watch has contributed significantly towards the funding and that helped us a lot; companies supported us which was great. Residents also contributed money and it took a lot of effort but we are happy that we did it.”

The boom gates have two traffic entry and exit points. There are two cameras for facial and licence plate recognition, and all the information will be transferred and controlled by Beagle Watch. There will be no security guards at the gates.

Beagle Watch managing director André Aiton explained that they have been working closely with the committee to get the road closure going and it took a lot of work.

“We are delighted that the booms will start working. Blairgowrie is a high crime area because of the streets going in and out – it is quick, easy access. There is no better way to try and prevent and displace the crime than road closures.

“We will be monitoring who comes in and out. We can not restrict anyone; it is still free-going access but we hope we can keep our residents safe and we hope this will bring some calm to the ever-increasing crime.”

Resident Robyn Bell explained that this road closure was amazing as it brought their community together. “It was an amazing experience to see and get involved – we created something special for our community.”
