Young dancer feels proud of her achievements

Onalerona Mahlangu advises dancers who dreams to be on her level to practise hard and not doubt themselves.

Onalerona Mahlangu is an 11-year-old street and hip-hop dancer. She was recently selected and represented South Africa at the World Championships in Poland.

Reflecting on her journey Onalerona writes:

Onalerona Mahlangu is proud of her achievements.

Being selected to represent my country and getting my Protea colours as a soloist has been the most special thing in my life. Especially for my age and since I only started dancing in 2020.

Travelling to Poland was my first trip out of the country. It was also my first time in an international competition so it was scary and exciting at the same time.

From watching other dancers from other countries, it seems dance is very big there compared to us. They take it very seriously, more than we do.

I love dancing with all my heart. I get to be free and let my body talk. It inspires me a lot to watch other dancers on international stages.

To be where I am now, took practice and focus. To dancers who want to someday be in this space, I advise you to practise a lot and never doubt yourself. Choose the right community and environment and you’ll grow to be the best version of yourself.
