Phase two project set to finish early in 2024

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman says residents must learn to compromise a little to get the benefits and try to be cooperative.

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman encourages residents to be patient and give the project more time to be completed so that they can enjoy the delivery of services.

This comes after the second phase of upgrading to a bulk storm water system, which began in May between Pine and Vale avenues, experienced delays. The three-part project began three years ago and is currently in its second phase.

The phase-two project was supposed to be completed in four months, which ended in September. However, construction encountered several difficulties.

Consulting engineer Mxolisin Khulu said they were delayed with the pipe relocation. “We found an existing water line where we had to install the bulk storm water pipe. We could not have both in the same place so we had to relocate the water line. We had to wait for Joburg Water to approve the relocation first before we could proceed.”

Construction manager Collen Nkosi explained that from Vale Avenue they are doing the sidewalk and from Vale to Pine Avenue they will install a bulk storm water pipe.

“Currently, we are relocating the water service; once it is done we will remove the existing services and instal the bulk storm water pipe and build the manholes around it.”

Phase two of the storm water project is set to be completed by January 30, 2024 according to Khulu.

He added that phase three of the project is still in the design stage but once everything is done they will communicate with the residents.

“Phase three is definitely coming. We will notify the councillor in advance and hold a public meeting to inform the residents on what to expect and which streets will be affected.”

Harman promised residents that she would do regular visits and keep up good communication with the team.
