Illegal dumping site worries residents

Residents of Northwold want the rubble and dirt at an unauthorised dumping site in Malibongwe removed

Concerns have been raised by Northwold residents concerning the unlawful dumping site in Randburg at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and President Fouche Streets.

The rubble is getting closer to totally obstructing the passageway connecting Malibongwe and Fifth Road.

Workers and other people utilising the pathway find it difficult to make their way across the dumping site, which has become a criminal hotspot.

Peter Jooster chairman of the Sunrise Estate which is close to the dumping site explained that the women who use the passage are now easy targets for criminals.

“This is not acceptable. Women got dropped by taxis and they have been robbed recently and it is all because of this dumping. In the last months, there have been two shooting incidents. One woman was also stabbed here, there have been rapes and muggings cases as well.”

He stated that the issue would worsen because rubble was already getting near to their barrier, giving crooks an advantage to climb in.

“It is a problem; we have old people staying in our complex it is a big security risk. Our guards are also not safe as they have to go around checking behind the fence at night and are completely exposed.”

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that they are aware of the dumping site.

“We have more than 100 illegal dumping hotspots in the city, and unfortunately, we can’t place officers permanently at all of these hotspots, and that is the reason why we are encouraging the community to report illegal dumpers.”

“Residents should take clear pictures of the registration number of vehicles dumping and send them to the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline 082 779 1361 together with the time date and location so that officers can trace and issue fines,” said Fihla.

He added that the JMPD will monitor the area and those found dumping illegally will be dealt with.

Jooster explained that they want the rubble to be removed before it escalates even further and for JMPD to frequently patrol the place.

Fihla confirmed that clearing of dumping sites is the responsibility of Pikitup and residents can call Joburg Connect to log a call.
