Choosing a drug-free path to a bright future

Mabaso explained that by fostering resilience and providing the tools for wise choices, we pave the way for our youth to be free from the grip of addiction, and together, we can create a brighter future for the generations to come.

Growing up in the heart of Soweto, where resilience meet challenges head-on, Mthokozisi Mxolisi Mabaso was surrounded by friends and neighbours. They shared dreams, aspirations, and a common struggle, but as time passed, he witnessed a stark transformation in the lives of those he held dear.

Mabasa writes:

The grip of drugs and alcohol slowly strangled the vibrant spirit of our community. I refrain from passing judgement on individuals, but it is undeniable that we must address the drug crisis that threatens our future. Jailing drug dealers can only take us so far. Our real battle lies in preserving and nurturing our families, for it is within these sacred bonds that our children’s destinies are shaped.

To guide children all over the country, we must recognise that knowledge is power. The first step is education. We must empower our youth with the understanding of the dangers lurking behind substance abuse. They must be aware of the life-altering consequences that follow a path marked by drugs and alcohol. Communication is key. Parents, guardians, and mentors must foster open, non-judgemental conversations.

Children should feel safe discussing their fears and curiosities. Encourage them to ask questions and seek guidance, assuring them that seeking help is a sign of strength. Additionally, we must strengthen our community networks. By collaborating with schools, community organisations, and local leaders, we can create safe spaces for our children.

These spaces provide support, mentorship, and extracurricular activities that keep young minds engaged in positive pursuits. Drug education programmes should be a fundamental part of the curriculum.

These programmes equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions and resist peer pressure. In conclusion, the battle against drugs is not won solely by cracking down on dealers – it is won within our homes, schools and communities.
