Bromhof knitters create for those in need but get something out of it too

Community members celebrate one year of knitting at Syringa Café.

It was a joyous occasion when a group that does knitting and crocheting for charity celebrated its one-year anniversary.

The ‘Syringa Knitwits’ is the Bromhof-based branch of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, and it just so happened that on the day they celebrated – October 19 – some more members joined to make a group an exact 67.

The festivities featured brunch and cake, a quiz, and talks by members about what the group meant to them.

“We are helping people in need through the blankets we make but doing this also helps us,” said Velly Matsebatlela. “People are going through a lot and it helps to meet every week, throughout the year and just talk while knitting. We are crocheting our problems away. We are knitting our lives together.”

Cobby Gqweta, who has been a member of the group since the start, said 67 Blankets was started in 2014 and it is bringing warmth and joy to so many people in South Africa.

In one year, the group has produced 567 blankets. It meets at Syringa Café from 10:00 until 13:00 every Thursday, and knits and crochets blankets year-round, donating whenever there is a need.
