Bromhof water outage nightmare finally over

Ralf Bittkau said that these bursts, unfortunately, cause huge volumes of water to be wasted, something that we can ill afford, living in a water-stressed country.

Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for Joburg Water, confirmed that they responded to and repaired recent several pipe bursts, and that water trucks were dispatched and continually filled for Bromhof residents.

This comes after several homeowners expressed concern about the numerous leaks in the area, which were followed by water outages.

“There have been regular bursts in the area and these were attended to as and when Johannesburg Water was made aware of them through the community logging calls.”

She explained that when there is a burst water pipe, water has to be isolated (closed) before repairs can take place, which was the case with the burst pipes in the area. “As a result, this caused low pressure and intermittent water supply, and not a total shut-down.”

According to Shabalala, they normalised the pressure and volume around September 20, and afterwards repairs to a vandalised zonal valve were done.

“Water high pressures and high volumes of water into the zone and bursts in the area, including Nagtegaal, Buiten, Raven/Xanadu and the valve leak on President Fouché were causes of outages and were related to several points impact.”

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau explained that frustrated residents’ behaviour towards him during these difficult times was unprintable.

“I had to take it all the way to the upper management. They instructed the regional manager to put on his overall and get out of his office. After that, it took three days to resolve the issues, which were mainly due to a vandalised valve near the taxis on President Fouché. As I was dealing with a major power outage in North Riding at the same time, the stress was beyond the norm.”
