Selam Gebre wins the Jozi edition of the SPAR Grand Prix series
After an exceptional run, Selam Gebre has finished in first place in this year's SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi.
A brilliantly beautiful day in Johannesburg welcomed elite runner Selam Gebre, from Ethiopia and Nedbank Running Club as she came in first at the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi.
Ethiopian runner Tadu Nare has won the SPAR Grand Prix series, after earning the most points during the six run series.
Finishing the Jozi race in second and third place were Debash Kelati Desta and Irvette van Zyl respectively.
As the first South African finisher to cross the line, van Zyl said that she was grateful to be on the road and enjoying running. “To the many men on the road showing support, thank you. This is a great day to be part of.”
Grandmaster (60+ category) winner Judy Bird says it was a long year and hard week struggling with a cold. This was her slowest time of year but she pushed through. She called the route a beautiful one in scenic leafy suburbs.
Blind runner, Louzanne Coetzee called it a hectic route with lots of hills. Her guide, Claus Kempen agreed that they are not used to the hills but that it was great to run this route for the first time. Louzanne said it was not super hot but definitely warmer than races over the last few months. So conditions were a little more difficult.
