Broken barriers on a dangerous bend on Republic Road will be replaced after a ward councillor complained about them to the municipality for months.
Accidents are common on the bend just outside Windsor Glen Shopping Centre and the barriers have been broken both on the side, and on the island in the middle of the road, over the years. Ward 98 councillor Beverley Jacobs escalated complaints from residents, who feel unsafe as cars regularly hit the barriers, or even plow through them onto the kerb.
“The barriers have been bent so badly out of shape over the years at this high accident zone,” Jacobs said. “A warning light was installed a few years back but this has not worked for some time. But people drive recklessly on this bend anyway, when the traffic lights nearby do not work you can see most cars do not even stop at them.”
Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Kelebogile Mafa told Randburg Sun that its regional teams would be sent to collect the broken barrier.
“We are awaiting confirmation on the reinstatement/replacement of guardrails and we’ll be able to provide further details,” she said.
Jacobs said she was relieved to hear this.
