City Parks to instal wire mesh fence in Delta Park until gate is replaced

Plan made to restrict access after Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary gate is stolen.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo said it will erect a temporary wire mesh fence where the main gate to Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary was stolen, while it waits for a claim to be processed by its insurance department for a new gate.

The entity’s media relations assistant, Noeleen Mattera, said that only one gate to the sanctuary had been stolen. This just months after a new lock was placed on it at the expense of volunteers and donors.

The sanctuary is a conservation area fenced-off in Delta Park. Access is limited to City Parks and Zoo personnel and select volunteers.

However, homeless people have been known to live in the sanctuary though there have been efforts by volunteers to have them removed over the years.

“I wonder if this is something to do with the fence being repaired and hence all the ‘paths’ were closed,” she said, referring to gaps in the fence made by the homeless to get in and out of the sanctuary.
