Alliance Learners Transport Association completes safety training

With the expertise gained from the EMS and JMPD community engagement programs, the Alliance Learners Transport Association in Region B in Randburg will be able to assist wherever they can

Members of the newly formed Alliance Learner Transport Association in Randburg Region B received certificates for completing safety training at Randburg Fire Station Besafe Centre.

The EMS and JMPD community outreach departments offered the training. It covered basic firefighting, first aid, and road safety.

Zogan Ebrahim, JMPD community outreach officer said they recognised the need to train drivers who transported learners in the event of an accident. This was so there would be someone who is trained to assist the injured and calm the situation until emergency personnel arrived.

“We have a working relationship with schools where we teach road safety. When we met with various associations, the Alliance group was the first that came with a list of interested people. They took that more enormous step and showed that they wanted to be part of the project.
“We want every association to be involved because there is a Besafe Centre at the fire station in every region. They should utilise those centres so we can encourage our residents to be first responders.”

The Alliance was founded to address the concerns and challenges that the drivers in Region B faced. They also ensure that their members are responsible for the learners and that their vehicles are in roadworthy condition.

Sam Lekalakala, vice chair of the Alliance, said, “We’ve realised that we needed also to be ready for anything, we work with learners and we need to be ready to assist them in everything. If there is an accident, we need to be able to assist also while waiting for help.”

He concluded that they wanted to inform the public that this type of training was available and they would also return to schools to notify them that the drivers had been trained and could assist in certain situations.
