Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary gate is stolen

Florence Bloom Bird Santuary is supposed to be people-free but its gate has been stolen so there is access for anyone now.

The main gate to the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary has been stolen. This just months after a new lock was placed on it at the expense of volunteers and donors.

The sanctuary is a conservation area fenced off in Delta Park. Access is limited to City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) personnel and select volunteers.

However, homeless people have been known to live in the sanctuary, though there have been efforts by volunteers to have them removed over the years.

Delta Park warden and author of its online newsletter Shirley Tebbutt said the whole gate had been removed over the weekend August 5 to 6.

“I wonder if this is something to do with the fence being repaired and hence all the ‘paths’ were closed,” she said, referring to gaps in the fence made by the homeless to get in and out of the sanctuary.

Questions were sent to City Parks media relations assistant, Noeleen Mattera, pertaining to whether City Parks is aware of the theft; will City Parks replace the gate, and if so, when,; whether it is common for the gates of conservation areas to be stolen, in parks around Joburg, and if so, what could be the cause.

She replied on August 7 that the enquiry will be forwarded to the facilities management as well as regional manager, for responses to these questions.
