92-year-old loves to paint nature

Art society member draws on the beauty of nature for his inspiration.

Arthur Atkins (92) has fond memories of growing up on a farm in the countryside and these are still a source of inspiration to the veteran artist many years later.

The Randburg Art Society member has been painting since he retired 35 years ago and has even taught art for three decades. Atkins is currently an associate member of the Watercolour Society of South Africa.

Personally, however, he prefers to use acrylics and pastels. Seashores, rivers and streams, isolated farms, sunsets and all things nature comprise most of his work. These paintings are of excellent quality – Atkins’ brush strokes and attention to detail make his subjects appear real and vibrant.

“A skilled artist has a good eye and looks at the details closely,” Atkings appropriately explained. “They have enthusiasm for what they paint. For me, it is nature and colour.”

Randburg Art Society chairperson Teresa New thanked the community for taking an interest in local artists. “The society is doing well and we are seeing a number of artists join lately,” she said.

New invited artists interested in joining the society to visit one of the meetings on a Monday from 09:30 or phone them.
